Motor Vehicle Injuries
Today’s motor vehicles are significantly safer than what was on the market years ago. While technology has improved and engineers conduct crash tests to ensure the best possible outcomes, accidents still happen.
Even minor accidents can lead to debilitating motor vehicle injuries that cause pain for years to come. Physiotherapy at Easy Allied Health, however, can help with pain associated with injuries from motor vehicle accidents.
Common motor vehicle accident injuries
Here are the top reported injuries that can happen in a car crash.
Whiplash is caused when your head forcefully thrust backward then forward, causing muscles, ligaments, tendons, and possibly bones to shift or become injured. You may feel pain from whiplash as soon as 24 hours following a motor vehicle accident, but it may take up to a few days. A whiplash injury can be very painful and may take time to heal.
Similar to whiplash, you can suffer a herniated disk from the sudden impact of a car accident. A herniated disk occurs when one or more of the rubbery cushions between your vertebrae, called disks, slips out of place.
Herniated disks from motor vehicle injuries generally present in the upper spinal cord, but this type of injury can occur anywhere on your spine. Pain and discomfort from a herniated disk can range from minimal to severe, including:
- Arm or leg pain
- Numbness or tingling radiating near the affected nerves
- Weakness in the arms or legs depending on where the affected area is located
Arm and Leg Injuries
Like the head and neck, sudden trauma to your arms and legs can cause injury. Arm and leg injuries can be as severe as broken bones but can also include dislocated joints or damaged tendons.
While you generally don’t need surgery after arm or leg injuries that are not broken bones, these injuries are still painful and require medical attention. Symptoms of a dislocated joint include:
- A visibly deformed joint
- Inability to move your extremity at that joint
Torn ligaments and tendons can also cause pain, swelling, and difficulty in a range of motion, as well as stiffness and a loss of strength in the affected area.
What is Physiotherapy?
Injuries from a car crash can range from minimal to chronic pain. Physiotherapy improves motor function by retraining, stabilizing, and strengthening the parts of your body affected due to a motor vehicle injury.
Depending on the area and severity of your injury, our clinicians at Easy Allied Health can help set up an ICBC covered physiotherapy plan to help you heal and regain your range of motion. Your plan can include a combination of exercise and pain management, including physical rehabilitation, manual therapy, and injury rehabilitation.
FAQs on ICBC Physiotherapy
Here are quick answers to common questions about active rehabilitation.
If you have coverage through ICBC, you need to file a claim soon after being involved in a motor vehicle accident. However, our physiotherapists don’t need prior approval from ICBC for you to receive your allotted 25 visits.
If you are out of work due to your motor vehicle injuries, ICBC may be able to help. Check your benefits to see if you are eligible for recovery at home and other services you may need if recovery isn’t going as planned.
Our physiotherapists may provide a plan that includes a combination of massage, muscle and tendon manipulation, and ultrasound to treat your whiplash symptoms. Exercise is another standard treatment. Your physiotherapist at Easy Allied Health may also develop a series of low impact exercises you can do at home or in their office to strengthen the muscles in your neck.
Head and neck injuries are common motor vehicle injuries, so our experienced physiotherapists will use established routines to minimize personal downtime.
Our physiotherapists can establish a recovery plan that includes ice or heat applications as well as relaxation techniques that can combat chronic pain. Your personalized plan may also include exercises that help rebuild strength and range of motion.
Instead of having to book an office visit, our physiotherapists can come to you. Mobile Physiotherapy is especially helpful for severe injuries that make it difficult for you to leave your home. However, there are many reasons for choosing mobile physiotherapy over routine office visits, like lack of childcare, overcoming anxiety, or losing a car following your motor vehicle accident.
